Last saturday I woke up, not sure what I was going to do with my day. Maybe write some music, maybe play some games with some friends, whatever.
I got on the computer, and saw an invite from a really good mission friend of mine. This kid's name is Matias Pedreira, and he was my absolute favorite mission companion. He's from Uruguay, and I got to see him last time I was in Argentina. I paid for his ferry ticket to come across the river and see me in Buenos Aires. Together we were able to teach my aunt the gospel, and that was one of the coolest experiences of my life. I remembered teaching with him in Italy, and we still taught fluidly and well together, but this time we were teaching together on the other side of the world, in a different language, and we were teaching my own family. It was so cool! Matias Pedreira is one of the most spiritual and driven people I know. His whole life revolves around service and magnifying his callings. He's currently serving as branch president in his little branch, and as stake secretary. He's so innovative in finding new ways to serve, and he has a talent for teaching doctrine in a clear way. He's just an all-around solid kid.
Anyways, I got an invitation from him to help him out in a project for the church in Italian. The church had sent out a world-wide invitation to anyone that speaks Italian for this project, and sadly only me, Pedreira, and one other dude responded. The project was to transcribe the Italian hymnbook into the system so that I can be released on the LDS Tools app next week! As of now, the hymns are only available in English, Spanish, and Portuguese, but Italian is now a priority language because of the nearness of the temple dedication.
So, we got to work. We worked all day on this project. Since I woke up in the morning until five o clock in the evening, all day the three of us pounded through the entire hymnbook. I can't even describe the immense and profound joy that I felt while I was transcribing those hymns. It was a special feeling, knowing that I was doing something to help and serve the italians, the people that I AM (not was) called to serve and love.
Later in the evening, when I only had 11 hymns left to go, I was getting pretty tired. I wanted to just put the last 11 off until the next day. I took a break and got on Skype. I started talking to Maria Teresa, one of my really good friends in Rome. I told her about what we were doing, and she said "Oh Alan, that's so awesome! Because just today, I wanted to teach my daughter a hymn, but I didn't have a hymnbook, and I saw that they don't have the hymnbook for the phone!" That was all the motivation I needed! I hung up and powered through the last 11 hymns really fast. It feels so good to have had this opportunity to serve!
