Today was a chill day. Sarah's family lives in a small village in the countryside outside of Lyon. I love small European villages. They all have that same little feel of everyone knows everyone and every day is exactly the same routine. I went to the street market to buy vegetables, and everyone there was calling each other by first names and kissing each other as if they saw eachother there every single day, which they probably do.
I also missed so much the food in Europe. Nice, fresh vegetables with so much flavor that cost almost nothing. I especially missed the tomatoes. They're completely different from the tomatoes we have in the New World.
After I finished all my translation work for the day, I went for a walk out in the countryside and enjoyed the beautiful view from a small path lined by two stone walls that wound through the forest and over the hills of the countryside. The view was amazing, and it was truly a spiritual experience.
Then I cooked dinner for Sarah's family. They thought it was awesome, but if there had been an Italian present they would have KILLED ME, because I broke several laws in the codex of Italian cuisine. I made Pasta alla crema di patate (potato cream pasta) which is strictly a WINTER FOOD, and I served it with Friselle, which is strictly a summertime food and more specifically a summertime food for LUNCH. And on top of that, I modified the recipe of the Friselle a bit. Good thing I'm in France, because if I was in a small village in the mountains in Italy and I served that, I would probably be in the stocks in the middle of town square getting vegetables thrown at me right now. Italians take their food SERIOUSLY.
